Summer Seminars Overview
The International Society of the Rorschach
and Projective Methods has developed a
tradition of holding the Summer Seminars
every year in between the world congresses.
What makes the Summer Seminars
special is that the number attending is limited,
to a maximum of 40 participants, in
addition to the faculty. We consider this
important, as it allows all participants an
opportunity to actively engage in the discussions
and the chance to get to know
each other over the course of the 3 days,
which is facilitated by participants and the
faculty staying in the same hotel and eating
lunch together. Participants who attended
previous Summer Seminars have commented
favourably on the welcoming, friendly
and collaborative nature of the Seminars.
We are pleased to welcome members
from all over the world, some of whom we
are delighted to welcome back year after
year. For the 2012 Seminars in San Remo,
participants came from the USA, Canada,
England, Ireland, Israel, France, Switzerland,
Sweden, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Japan
and Argentina. We have found English to
be the common language and so all the
presentations are in English. There will,
however, be colleagues who can translate
on a more informal basis into other major
languages when needed, during the lectures/
workshops and to facilitate the dialogues.
The Summer Seminars also serve an
important purpose to raise funds for the
Hermann Rorschach Archives and
Museum (HRAM) in Bern, an initiative
developed by John Exner.
The historical context
Our format for the Summer Seminars is
not new and actually dates back to the late
40’s and early 50’s, when they were held in
Zurich, Switzerland. The well-regarded
Rorschach specialists of the time, Walter
Morgenthaler and Margaret Loosli-Usteri
were central to the development of the
early programs and contributed actively
to them. Presentations were also made by
other outstanding Rorschach colleagues,
such as Schachter and Bohm. Each person
usually presented once, or twice at the
most, with some form of roundtable discussion
and the topics varied consider ably.
Since the revival of the Summer Seminars,
the ISR has chosen Spiez, Switzerland;
Vaxholm, Sweden; Montegrotto,
Italy; Lucerne, Switzerland; Prague, Czech
Republic; Montreux, Switzerland and San
Remo, Italy for their beautiful locations
and atmosphere to host our seminars (in
2001, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010
and 2012).
Last review by Participant –
San Remo, 2012
Surrounded by the colors and perfumes of
San Remo, Agneta Rosenquist (Chairperson
of the 2012 SS) took all of us through a unique
experience of learning and friendship.
Around the main theme of this session –
Psychosis and Rorschach assessment – the
seminar days included theoretical sessions,
small study groups and final plenary discussions.
Subjects of interest were studied in
depth, promoting reflection and participa -
tion from everybody.
Also during the periods of teamwork, under
the guidance of the more experienced
professionals, everyone was encouraged to
bring forth his own contribution. This
promoted an integrated teamwork aimed at
the in depth understanding of clinical cases
and protocols, which took us well beyond
our differences in language and approach.
Odile Husain (from Canada), focused on
the complex theme of the nosological
position of paranoia ("The silent face of
paranoia: a structural approach to a case of
paranoiac character [Rorschach and TAT]").
She proposed a theoretical model capable of
differentiating the different levels of paranoiac
functioning (from personality struc -
ture to delusion), well differentiated from
the paranoid functioning. In the afternoon,
she provided the analysis of the Rorschach
and TAT protocols of a highly significant
case.
Fiorella Gazzale (from Italy), in her lecture
“Dialoguing with Psychosis through the
Rorschach”, proposed a touching journey to
the very core of psychosis, giving it a voice
through the Rorschach language. The compelling
case of Mr. G. was addressed through
an integrated psychodiagnostic approach…
comparing findings from different instruments
(Rorschach, WAIS-R and MMPI-2),
thus providing an excellent description and
understanding of the patient's psychic functioning.
During the final working day we attended
the detailed lecture of Jim Kleiger (from the
US), “Differential Diagnosis of Disordered
Thinking: What does the Rorschach Tells
Us?” Once again, the Rorschach revealed its
great potential as an investiga tive tool which
can often highlight and describe signs of degradation
or "breakage" that remain silent or
are hidden during clinical observations or
interviews. The case of Nathan engaged all
of us, until the very end, in a process of
understanding and discus sion, in terms of
diagnosis, prognosis and treatment.
Odile, Fiorella and Jim, were truly challenging
and engaging speakers. And our group
leaders were also great: they gradually led us
- from the verandah to the pool! - through an
exciting journey.
As a reward for our hard work, Agneta, with
the support of our colleague Lorena Sospetto,
had organized periods of culture, leisure
and social gathering: this included the visit
to the beautiful Villa Nobel with its rich
history museum and the elegant gala dinner
served by the pool of Hotel Londra. All this
took place in a delightful atmosphere.
I would like to close with special thanks to
Agneta, for this year again - with the style
and grace that have always characterized
her.

Oporto and FADO –
History and Culture
The City of Oporto (Porto), built along the
hillsides overlooking the mouth of the
Douro river, is an outstanding urban landscape
with more then 2,000-year history.
This city gave Portugal its own name about
200 B.C. when the Romans gave it the
name Portus Cale and later, in 868, Vímara
Peres named it Portucale). Its continuous
growth, linked to the sea, can be seen in the
many and varied monuments, from the
cathedral with its Romanesque choir, to the
neoclassical Stock Exchange and the typically
Portuguese Manueline-style Church
of Santa Clara.
Porto has a Mediterranean climate. In
the winter the temperatures ranges between
5 °C and 14 °C and in the summer
between 15 °C and 25 °C. Occasionally, it
may reach or even exceed 35 °C in July or
August.
The origins of FADO, the ‘national
song’ remains a mystery, but thought possibly
to date from the ‘Infant ships’ of the
time of the ‘Overseas Discoveries’ (C
1500), where these songs capture the themes
of love, jealousy, misfortune along
with hopes and dreams.
The Rorschach Archives and Museum
Any surplus income realized by these
Seminars will be used to support the
current operation and the future development
of the Hermann Rorschach Archives
and Museum (HRAM) in Bern, to the
benefit of all members and researchers
who use the Rorschach. Our faculty and
organizers have therefore agreed not to
receive any payment for this event – which
is also the tradition with the Summer Seminars.

The Faculty
The Faculty that have been invited for
these IXth Summer Seminars and that we
are proud to present, are:
– Noriko Nakamura, Japan
– Prof. Anne Andronikof, France
– Dr Kari Carstairs, United Kingdom
Discussant and Curator of the HRAM:
Prof. Anne Andronikof, France
Summer Seminars Chairperson and Coorganizer:

Justine McCarthy Woods
(jmwoodspsych@live.co.uk)

This time ‘Capturing Change, using the Rorschach
and other tests’ is our common theme
Scheduled half-day lectures (one per day), Friday 19 – Sunday 21 July. There will also be an afternoon program
each day, consisting of case studies. They will be discussed among the participants in small groups, followed by
roundtable discussions, in which participants will have the opportunity to discuss the case studies together with
our faculty.
Program:
Friday Noriko Nakamura, Japan “Tuning into Calls for Transformation – exploring what
the Rorschach tells us about psychotherapeutic change”
Saturday Prof. Anne Andronikof, France “Developmental changes in children – as captured
by the Rorschach”
Sunday Dr Kari Carstairs, United Kingdom “The challenge of assessing change within a legal
framework: Two case examples using the Rorschach”
Chairperson: Dr Justine McCarthy Woods Discussant: Anne Andronikof, France
Daily Program:
Morning lecture 09hrs – 12hrs workshop and roundtable 14hrs – 18hrs
Social program:
On Saturday night, we are delighted to be able to offer a special price (35€/person) for the Summer Seminars
FADO dinner, to be held in ‘O Fado’ restaurant, situated in the heart of the historical city of Oporto. This
dinner, which will include the FADO (Portuguese National Song’), sung by the best FADO interpreters, will
provide participants a unique experience to appreciate Portuguese cultural folklore, in comfortable surroundings
while enjoying local dishes accompanied by Oporto and regional wines.
Since the program is being set well in advance, slight changes may occur. Nonetheless, we feel confident that
this will be an enjoyable and interesting opportunity for sharing the knowledge and expertise of researchers
and clinicians from different schools and traditions, as well and meeting up with old friends and new colleagues
from around the world.
The Summer Seminars are taking place at the HF Ipanema Park hotel in Porto. All participants are expected
to register separately for their stay, directly at www.hfhotels.com/porto/isr
A number of rooms have been reserved for the occasion. Please note that the maximum number of participants
at the Seminars is 40, on a first come, first served basis!
Important: The hotel registration has to be done separately.
